A major source of waste comes from spoiled or unconsumed food. It’s estimated that the U.S. generates 60 million tons of food waste within one year. Being more mindful of what you buy and how much food you make can help reduce this large amount of food waste. Meal planning and prepping is a great way to stay on track. By planning ahead you can create grocery lists of what you need and reduce the amount of unnecessary purchases. If you make too much food, save it to eat the next day instead of throwing it out. If you’re still finding that you’re producing too much food waste, see if your local farmers market accepts compost drop offs. Composting keeps food out of landfills and back into the soil.
Ditch the Car
Vue32 has a walking score of 88 making it easy to find alternatives to driving. Don’t feel like walking? Biking is a perfect way to get your daily exercise in and reduce your carbon footprint. For those longer trips, look for public transportation or carpooling options. You not only cut down the number of cars on the road, you’ll be saving gallons of gas and reducing air pollution.
Turn Off the Power
Last year, the U.S. generated roughly 4,015 billion kilowatt hours (kWh). That’s a lot of fossil fuels being used. You can cut down your energy use by practicing this simple habit, turn everything off. When you leave a room, turn the lights off. When you can, choose natural light over artificial light. If you have several electronic devises plugged into the wall, switch to a power strip. Power strips allow you to easily switch electrical appliances off when not being used. Examples of perfect opportunities to switch your power strip off is when you’re sleeping or leaving your home.
Reduce Plastic Waste
We’re all aware that plastic is not an environmentally friendly material. But the environmental effects can be shocking. See for yourself at this Earth Day Network plastic fact sheet. There are ways to reduce your plastic use. Start by cutting out purchasing plastic water bottles in bulk. Instead purchase a water filter pitcher that your can refill and place in your refrigerator. Use this water to fill a reusable water bottle when on the go. Other ways to cut out plastic are at the grocery store. Choose paper bags over plastic, or better yet, bring your own reusable grocery bags. Some grocery stores will even give you a discount for bringing your own bag.
